The 2010 "More Than Just Mud" Music Fest

If you couldn't express your love for the Tofino Mudflats through photos, poetry or MiNiFLiCKs, then perhaps you can through music! This year's mudflat contest medium is music and we at the Raincoast Education Society can't wait to hear your musical creations! Get out your guitar, dust off those piano keys, and warm up those vocal chords! Combine your love of music with your love of the mudflats! See below for more contest details.

Format and Length

Music must be submitted as mp3 or mp4 files. Music videos must be in DVD format (contact kimberly@raincoasteducation.org for assistance).

All music is limited to 5 minutes, including credits (if any) . Live performances at the Mudflats Music Fest Evening can be up to 7 minutes long.

Official Contest Rules

Theme: The Tofino Mudflats are an internationally significant migratory bird stopover and home to hundreds of species of wildlife. As part of the Tofino Mudflats Wildlife Stewardship Project, the Raincoast Education Society (RES) promotes the protection, conservation and respectful use of the Tofino Mudflats. Video entries must be consistent with this theme.

Eligibility: Anyone who has visited and been inspired by the Tofino Mudflats. If anyone less than 18 years of age is involved in any part of the creation of the music, a parent or guardian must sign relevant forms. Please contact us at kimberly@raincoasteducation.org or 250-725-2560.

Entries: All songs or musical pieces must be original and created specifically for this contest. Entrants must complete and submit an Entry Form (at the end of this document). You may submit more than one entry.

Limit: Entrants may submit more than one song, musical piece, or music video but are eligible for one prize only.

Length: All entries must be five (5) minutes or less, including credits. Live performance on April 20 may be up to 7 minutes.

Format: Entries must be submitted as .mp3, or .mp4 (e.g. iTunes) files. If the entry is a music video, it must be submitted as a DVD file. We will work with contestants to ensure the file is useable – please contact kimberly@raincoasteducation.org for more details.

Genre: Any. Obscene lyrics will disqualify entries.

Judging: We are looking for innovative submissions that are inspired by the Tofino Mudflats. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

40% Impact of message
30% Originality and creativity
30% Technical ability (sound quality)

Prizes: A minimum of three prizes will be awarded:
• First Prize $250 cash
• Second Prize $150 cash
• Third Prize $100 gift certificate to Shelter Restaurant.

Return of Entries: Submitted files will not be returned and become the property of the RES. License Grants: By submitting an entry to the More than Just Mud Music Contest, entrants and all individuals involved, agree to grant the RES, the perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive license, to present, reproduce, modify, publish, edit, translate, distribute, and make derivative works of their entries, without fee or penalty, on any and all platforms (including without limitation, public presentations, internet, cable, podcast, etc) for educational uses, promotion and presentation. Entrants will be credited wherever their song is played or video is used. As these submissions will be shown publicly, entries must not contain content that is defamatory, libelous, hateful, sexually explicit, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise objectionable, as deemed by the RES.

Copyright: Music and music videos must be your original creation. If you use materials that are owned by others (including music, sound effects, footage, logos and images), you must acquire the legal right to use them. MUSIC/SOUNDS: At the time of submission, you must provide proof of any relevant documentation (or be in the process of acquiring it) for your use of music/sound in your film. There are many links under “Music Tools” on the blog to assist you with acquiring music/sounds for your film. TALENT: You must submit the written consent (and parent’s/guardian’s consent for those under 18) of every identifiable person or voice in your film (see Talent Release Form). Material, Location and Music Release Forms are also available on the blog for your convenience. Please contact the contest coordinator or RES staff if you have any questions or difficulties.

Release: The RES and their affiliates, funders, respective officers, directors and employees (“the Releasees”) are not responsible for: i) any human or other error, ii) technical malfunctions, lost/delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion or defect, iii) failures or malfunction of any telephone network, computer equipment or software iv) inability to access any online service or web site, v) injury or damage to entrant’s or any other person’s computer, related to or resulting from participation in this Contest vi) any injury to person or property, including but not limited to video equipment, arising from the entrant’s participation in this Contest vii) the use or misuse of any prize won. Releasees are not responsible for entries that are lost, late, misdirected, damaged, illegible or malfunctioning.

By entering the MORE THAN JUST MUD MUSIC CONTEST, participants agree:
• To be bound by these Official Rules.
• To read and sign the Contest’s Pledge (see below)
• That if they violate any of the Official Rules or Pledge they will be disqualified.
• To submit original work that does not violate copyright laws or any other rights of another person or corporation.
• To obtain and submit any relevant documentation for music, sound, talent and materials used in their films.
• That the RES will not be held liable for any copyright infringements perpetrated by them.
• That the RES cannot be held responsible for entries that are lost, damaged or delayed during transportation, or that cannot be played due to technical errors.
